While counting calories and food journaling can be helpful to ensure that you are getting required nutrients and get a ball-park estimate on how many calories you are consuming daily, they are not required for long term weight loss.
In fact, counting calories can promote diet obsession. Often when clients stop counting calories they are able to learn to listen to their bodies better and learn how to choose foods that serve them and make them feel well.
Our unhealthy food- and diet-obsessed culture would lead you to believe that calorie intake is the most important aspect of weight loss, but that simply is not the case. What is important when it comes to weight loss is the food quality and how those foods respond in our body.
